Easy fitness with your Wii?!

I’m all over new ways to get a work out without going to the gym. Not to mention if it incorporates video game consoles. For reason it just makes it that much more enjoyable because I’m playing a game. Now Nintendo comes along now with the Wii in many family households and introduces Wii Fit, formerly known as Wii Health Pack.

Wii Fit

Wii Fit looks like a basic white step on the floor. It actually is the next generation of ‘core’ workouts from home. This little board includes a disk with all sorts of fun games, workouts, and even measure your BMI and center of gravity. The game will keep track of your daily exercises and as well as give you an out of Wii Fitness Age just like the popular Brain Age game.

As of what we know as of right now the game includes specific games such as: Hoola hooping, Ball rolling game with your feet, Step exercises, Hitting soccer balls with head motions, Ski Jumping simulations with bending knees and popping up for jump, Push up exercises, and finally Yoga stances.

This is a new age of gaming why not add games that add fitness to the equation? This is just what Nintendo was thinking about when they came up with the Wii Health Pack.

Natural Mood-Enhancers

Life has a tendency to ruffle your feathers, to really get under your skin. Anxiety, depression, insomnia- they act like pesky telephone solicitors at times, paying no mind to when or where or how they get a hold of you, just as long as they do. SAM-e

S-adenoslymethionine ( or SAM-e) is a naturally occurring compound found in human cells, a derivative of the amino acid, methionine. SAM-e works by regulating various hormones and neurotransmitters in the body such as melatonin, serotonin, and dopamine. It has also been shown to be useful in supporting the health and functioning of the liver and joints. Research suggests that it has the power of prescription drugs used to treat depression without all the side-effects like weight gain and sexual dysfunction. (However, those with bipolar disorder should avoid using SAM-e, as it’s been shown to induce mania.)

5 HTP

5 HTP is a precursor to serotonin production, and its use has been shown to be effective in conditions such as depression, binge eating associated with obesity, chronic headaches, and insomnia 6. It also tones down anxiety by producing L-tryptophan, which results in feelings of calmness and cheerfulness. An upside to taking 5 HTP is that the effects of it are felt almost immediately (within 30 minutes to an hour); the downside: it can cause you to become drowsy.

There are several other natural mood enhancers you might want to check out as well, such as St. John’s wort, which is shown to improve well-being, or Valerian Root, which is used mostly for its sedative purposes.

Happiness Through Giving

To touch the life of another person is one of the most beautiful and fulfilling joys of life. To see the shape and splendor of one’s face evolve into a display of happiness because you could look past yourself for one moment, and to know that we each possess the ability to change a person’s day from bad to better and act upon it , is irrefutably one of the major keys to happiness.

One of the great things about giving is that it isn’t hard. It does not require emptying our pockets (but if this is what you desire, by all means!) What it does mean is becoming aware of the people around us. Every moment is an opportunity to give, whether it be a simple smile and “hello” to a stranger, an encouraging word to someone, etc.

Here are just a few things we can do today to make other people happy:

  • If you have something you aren’t using or don’t need, why not give it to someone who does need it? It’s amazing how “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure!”
  • Help someone with a task that you will not get credit for.
  • Give a friend a random gift when they least expect it. This is sure to make that person’s day!
  • Realize that there is always someone worse-off than you. Whether that means giving them money, making them dinner, buying them a few groceries, whatever- the joy of knowing that they will not have to go without makes all the difference!

Wheatgrass

Just the mere name, wheatgrass, evokes anything but pangs of craving. In fact, the plant, which is usually consumed in the form of a juice, tastes exactly like one might think- grass. However, the plant provides many vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and enzymes, and may be well worth getting over the taste to reap the benefits it has on your health.

Wheatgrass is actually a young wheat plant; but in it’s early stage it is considered a vegetable rather than a grain, and it is said that one ounce of its juice is equivalent to the vitamins, minerals, and amino acids of 2 1/2 pounds of green vegetables. It’s high in vitamin C, containing more than that of oranges; it has twice the amount of vitamin A that is found in carrots; and wheatgrass also provides vitamins E, K, and laetrile (B-17). Lysine, tryptophane, and phenylalnine are among 17 of the amino acids also provided by wheat grass.

Although there does not seem to be loads of scientific evidence to back all of the benefits many claim to receive from the consumption of wheatgrass, it has been said that it:

  • improves digestion
  • reduces high blood pressure
  • neutralizes toxins in the body
  • increases hemoglobin production, due to the plants high concentration of chlorophyll (70%) , which also works against bacteria in the body.

Some people have found wheatgrass to improve their energy, mood, physical well-being, and digestion. Anyone who has not given it a try, maybe you should!

Environment and Health

According to a research study lead by the University of British Columbia, people who live in neighborhoods with sidewalks and other pedestrian amenities tend to weigh less than people who live in more isolated, car-dependent areas. So why is it that nearly one fourth of people in the Atlanta area are exercise enthusiasts, but have to live in neighborhoods without sidewalks or other accommodations? Not only is this a problem in Atlanta, but it’s one that is widespread throughout the United States. Because of this, researchers are now suggesting the need for more sidewalks to accommodate those who would like to go walking and jogging.

Fighting Cancer With Diet

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters.

Cancer Update from John Hopkins:

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not
show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few
billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer
cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are
unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the
detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person’s
lifetime

3. When the person’s immune system is strong the cancer cells will be
destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple
nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental,
food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and
including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and
also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow,
gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver,
kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages
healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce
tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not
result in more tumor destruction.

9 When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and
radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence
the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by
not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one
important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like
NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is
harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses
but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make
it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg’s aminos or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the
gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and
substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is
acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef
or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and
parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains,seeds,
nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline
environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh
vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach
down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth
of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try
and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean
sprouts)and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are
destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea
is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water – best
to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy
metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive
enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrified
and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from
or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of
cancer cells and allows the body’s killer cells to destroy the cancer
cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6,
Flor-ssence,Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to
enable the bo dy’s own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other
supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed
cell death, the body’s normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted,
or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and
positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger,
unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic
environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax
and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising
daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular
level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.
